Golden Gardens, Spring Equinox 2020: A Serendipitous Encounter with @speedo.the.swift
Even amidst social distancing protocols, I had the chance to meet Charles Lugo while he was gathering driftwood by the Puget Sound on the Spring Equinox of 2020. I was out with friends, camera in hand, when I noticed this stranger building a unique structure from driftwood and personal belongings. The scene, bathed in the last golden rays of sunlight, drew me in. I felt compelled to introduce myself and capture the moment.
Golden Gardens was unexpectedly crowded that day, with families and friends trying to enjoy a beautiful spring afternoon despite the looming pandemic. I’m always grateful to have my camera with me for spontaneous moments like these—this one was unplanned, but the symbolism and spontaneity made it all the more powerful.
